DENVER – July 18, 2024 – “When Hall of Fame running back Terrell Davis was hauled off his United Airlines flight in handcuffs, he handled it perfectly. It’s sad we even have to say that,” said Casey Krizman, founder of Krizman Law.

“When the cops get it wrong – and they often do – you’re tempted to get angry and to plead your case,” Krizman said. “But when six FBI agents, acting on a flight attendant’s dubious allegation that he was assaulted, came down the aisle and cuffed Mr. Davis in front of his family, the Super Bowl legend went peacefully.

“As outrageous as this incident is, it’s a reminder that interactions with police are perilous,” Krizman said. Here’s the advice he gives to people who are stopped, questioned, or arrested by police:

  • Immediately invoke your right to remain silent. There’s nothing you can say in this situation that works in your favor.
  • Do not answer questions about what you are doing, where you are going, or where you are from.
  • Do not consent to a search.
  • Invoke your right to an attorney right then and there.
  • Don’t try to explain or give excuses in response to police assertions.

Especially for people of color, take extra care not to move or act in any way that could be construed as attempting to escape or obstruct the police. “As we’ve seen across America, even calm and docile people have been injured and killed during police interactions. I urge everyone to be extremely cautious in these situations, so you don’t become the next victim.”
