Episode #4: Municipal Courts: Where Justice Goes To Die

In Colorado, where you’re charged with a crime can mean the difference between a short jail stay and nearly a year behind bars for similar offenses. This broken system disproportionately impacts poor and marginalized people, and the outcome often hinges on which box an officer checks during the arrest process.

In the latest episode of the Criminal INjustice podcast, State Rep. Javier Mabrey joined Casey Krizman to talk about House Bill 1147. This crucial legislation would require municipal courts across Colorado to follow the same sentencing guidelines for low-level, poverty-related offenses, such as petty theft and trespassing. The bill also guarantees due process rights—including access to counsel—that are too often denied in some cities’ courts.

House Bill 1147 has bipartisan support and has passed both chambers of the legislature, but now it sits on Gov. Jared Polis’s desk. The Governor has not yet committed to signing the bill. Krizman Law urges all injustice warriors to write to Gov. Polis and urge he sign the bill.

Let your voice be heard:

  • Write or call Governor Polis’s office (Email: GovernorPolis@state.co.us Phone: 303-866-2885)
  • Post on social media urging action
  • Email your state legislators and encourage them to support the bill

Now is the time to demand equal justice under the law for all Coloradans.
